Jonathan got an opportunity to work with his hobby during the summer

Entering one of our summer jobs could be a great first step into the job market and an opportunity to start building your career alongside your studies. For us at isMobile, one of the great things about the summer is the new colleagues who join our team. This summer Jonathan Kostet, about to be a 3rd-year student in the Technology program at Luleå Upper Secondary School, joined us for four weeks.

Jonathan Kostet learned how to code a couple of years ago and since then programming has been one of his hobbies. He is just about to begin his third year in the Technology Program at Luleå Upper Secondary School and he has a great interest in IT.

How did you find out about the job opportunity at isMobile?

It was my programming teacher who advised me to contact isMobile. I think that one of the main reasons I got the job was because I've been programming for several years at home, so I had hands-on experience in problem-solving. On the other side, one of the most important factors for me to enter the job was that isMobile had actual tasks they could give me. Real work where I could apply my programming skills.

What did you get to do at isMobile?

I worked four weeks at isMobile with writing code that tests their web applications. The focus was on automatic testing and CLI code. It is important that the code you write behave like a real user of the product, e.g. how they click buttons and open menus.

What was it like working at isMobile?

Well, I spent most of the time at my computer writing code and testing if the code worked or not. When writing code, a large part of the time you don't write any lines of code at all. Instead, you spend a lot of time trying to find solutions to problems you encounter by experimenting, reading documentation and googling.

At isMobile, unlike when I sit at home with my projects, I got the opportunity to discuss the problems with others. I could ask questions about the application I was testing or how to design the code.

It was really interesting to listen and learn from those who work in the IT industry. Another fun thing about the summer job was that I got to do problem-solving and it was of course also nice to get paid for your skills. The hardest part of the job was probably sitting at a computer all day, without your back aching.

Tips for others who are considering a summer job?

Dare to reach out to the companies you are interested in. If you are interested in a specific area you should see if there is an opportunity to work with that during the summer. If there is a good match the company might find relevant tasks for you to do and offer you a summer job.
